Discipleship Guide – Seeking God’s Vision – Week 1
Rev. Sean discusses the verse Proverbs 29:18 – “When there’s no vision, the people get out of control, but whoever obeys instruction is happy” and tells us that there are a few things that we and the church need to focus on to have a vision for our lives. Real vision the church needs to focus on is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14 “if my people who belong to me will humbly pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.” Vision starts with praying and seeking God. We all have at some point wanted to hear from God in some capacity.
When the church is out of step of God’s will for this world it is seen as a visionary misalignment. When the church doesn’t live into the love of Christ for this world as Christ has called us to love, then we have a visionary misalignment. When Jesus is asked about the greatest commandment, He says this in Mark 12:30-31, “And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You will love your neighbor as you love yourself. No other commandment is greater than these.” So, we have no vision when the church doesn’t love God with everything we have. When the church doesn’t love our neighbor as ourselves, then there is no vision. The true vision of the church is to go a make disciples and we do that by sharing the love of Christ that is within us.
1) Where do you see the church being out of line with it’s vision for the world?
2) Where do you see yourself being “misaligned?”
3) How does living into 2 Chronicles 7:14 truly change how the church and the world interact with each other? Explain
4) If the church (universal) continues on the same track that it is going, what will happen to people who do not know Christ in this world? Explain.
5) What is the church’s first step to making a difference in seeing what vision God has for the church and for people who follow Christ?
