Discipleship Guide: Week 4 - Rev. Monica Mowdy

Text: Matthew 7:28–29

Theme: Let Jesus Speak into Your Life

Focus:

Big Idea: The difference between admiration and knowing is discipleship and surrender - letting the authority of Jesus flow through you through the power of the Holy Spirit

Scripture:

“When Jesus finished these words, the crowds were amazed at his teaching because he was teaching them like someone with authority and not like their legal experts.”

Matthew 7:28-29 CEB

Discussion Questions:

1. What does it mean that Jesus taught “with authority,” and how was this authority different from that of the Pharisees or traditional rabbis?

2. How does Jesus' posture of sitting down to teach in Matthew 5:1 reflect his role and method as a Rabbi? What might this signify for us today as we seek to teach or lead?

3. In what ways can the words of Jesus be transformational rather than just informational in our own lives?

4. How does merely displaying the Ten Commandments differ from actually embodying them? Can you share an example from your own life or community?

5. Why is “living out” the teachings of Jesus more powerful than just speaking about them? What role does the Holy Spirit play in this process?

6. How can we avoid reducing our faith to static symbols or wall hangings and instead live a faith that is dynamic and relational?

7. What is the difference between admiring Jesus and following Jesus? Why is this distinction important for discipleship?

8. In your own life, are there practices—like the color mixing in art class or baking with your granddaughter—that helped you truly assimilate knowledge? How might this parallel learning to live like Jesus?

9. How do others experience Jesus through you? What do your words and actions say about who you follow?

10. What would it look like to be so transformed by Christ that God’s will is no longer just something you strive to obey, but something that has become a part of who you are?
