Discipleship Guide: Week 5 - Rev. Lynn Patterson

A Discipleship Guide for Branch Groups is a practical resource designed to help group leaders and members grow in their faith together through structured Bible study, prayer, accountability, and spiritual practices. It typically includes weekly topics, discussion questions, Scripture readings, and action steps aimed at fostering deeper relationships with God and one another. The guide promotes spiritual maturity, community building, and active living out of Christian values.

Weekly Topic: The Righteousness That Counts - 8/3/25

Scripture: Matthew 5:17-20

Questions for Reflection and Response:

If righteousness is right relationship with God, self and neighbor, what does righteousness mean to you?

In verse 20, Jesus tells us that one’s righteousness must be greater than that of the legal experts and Pharisees to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. In your opinion, what does a person need to do to be “more righteous”?

In your opinion do laws (religious or secular) help humans to better relate to or serve each other, or do they tend to limit positive interaction? Give some specific examples.

How do the topics that Jesus discusses in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) connect to The Law? How are Jesus’ recommendations righteous?

Actionable Steps:

Take note of righteous happenings that occur in your everyday life. (They may be intentional or not.) How do these acts effect the designated recipient? How do they influence others who happen to witness them? What are other aspects of note?
